Entertainment Weekly Names Sports Illustrated’s Matt Bean as Editor

Bean was previously the managing editor of SportsIllustrated.com

Matt Bean has been named editor of Entertainment Weekly, the publication’s editorial director, Jess Cagle announced on Monday.

Effective immediately, Bean will be responsible for editorial oversight of Entertainment Weekly’s print and digital properties. He will report to Cagle, who previously occupied the position.

Bean is joining EW following a stint as SportsIllustrated.com’s managing editor beginning in 2012. While there, he launched SI Now, a daily live talk show. Previously, Bean spent eight years as an editor and digital executive at health and fitness magazine publisher Rodale.

While articles editor at Men’s Health, he oversaw the front-of-book section, edited feature packages and essays, and was responsible for booking covers and features with actors, athletes, and other celebrities. Once being promoted to vice president of Rodale’s Digital Product Development department, Bean guided the digital growth of the company’s other brands, including Men’s Health, Runner’s World, Bicycling and Women’s Health.

“Matt’s arrival is a testament to Time Inc.’s confidence in EW,” Cagle said in a statement. “He is a uniquely talented editor well-suited to this unique brand, and it will be a thrill to see where he and the extraordinary staff take EW in the years to come.”
