Mel Brooks Gets a DVD Box Set Retrospective

Shout Factory’s “The History of Mel Brooks, Part I” begins production this month for release in 2012

Never underestimate the power of the Schwartz!

So says Shout Factory, which is teaming up with legendary comedy stud Mel Brooks to produce a DVD box set celebrating the influential writer-director's lengthy career.

Brooks — who won an Oscar for his screenplay for "The Producers" and is responsible for more than a few seminal slapstick films, including "Blazing Saddles," "Young Frankenstein" and "Spaceballs" (which is where the opening quote of this article comes from) — will be heavily involved in the retrospective.

Production on "The History of Mel Brooks, Part 1" goes into production in July and the box set is slated to be released in Spring 2012.

Boasted the 85-year-old Brooks in a Shout Factory announcement: "As I so boldly wrote in 'The Producers,' 'when you got it, flaunt it.' Well, I got it, and Shout Factory is going to flaunt it."
