Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks on Possible Oprah 2020 Presidential Bid: ‘Where Do I Send the Check?’

Hanks joked that Oprah’s words part water

Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep stopped by Ellen’s studio Tuesday to promote their new film “The Post,” but the conversation ultimately turned to the duo discussing the potential of an Oprah Winfrey presidential bid in 2020.

“What a speech,” Ellen said of Winfrey’s rousing Golden Globes speech Sunday night, prompting applause from the audience and her guests. Ellen then told her guests that Winfrey’s partner, Stedman Graham, told the Los Angeles Times that “she would absolutely do it“–run for president–if the people wanted it.

“Wow, where do I send the check?” joked Streep.

“While she was speaking out on the patio of the Hilton hotel by the pool, the water was separating, in the pool,” Hanks added.

Earlier in the interview, Streep presented Ellen and Hanks with “Time’s Up” sweaters to match her own. The majority of stars present at the Golden Globes Sunday wore black to support the #TimesUp initiative, and that concept was mentioned in Oprah’s speech.

“For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men,” Oprah said when accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award. “But their time is up. Their time is up.”
