Miles Teller has been tapped to star as Goose’s son in the “Top Gun” sequel, an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.

The “Whiplash” actor beat out other young stars, including Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell, to play the son of Anthony Edwards’ character. Teller will join Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer in the long-awaited sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 action blockbuster, where Cruise’s aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is now a mentor to a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is set to hit theaters on July 12, 2019. Joseph Kosinski is directing from a script by Eric Warren Singer, Peter Craig and Justin Marks. Tony Scott had been circling the sequel project prior to his 2012 death.

The original action movie — which also starred Edwards and Kelly McGillis — followed the exploits of a flight academy and its students.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer for Jerry Bruckheimer Films and David Ellison for Skydance. Cruise also serves as a producer.

Teller’s recent credits include “Thank You For Your Service,” “Only The Brave,” and the recently wrapped Amazon series “Too Old to Die Young” with “Drive” director Nic Refn directing.

Teller is repped by CAA.

Variety was first to report.
