Netflix has released the cast of “Mindhunter” from their contracts, however the show has not been cancelled and co-executive producer David Fincher has the option of producing a third season in the future, a Netflix spokesperson tells TheWrap.
“David is focused on directing his first Netflix film ‘Mank’ and on producing the second season of ‘Love, Death and Robots.’ He may revisit ‘Mindhunter’ again in the future,” Netflix said in a statement, “but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”
The cast were released from their contracts in December.
“Mindhunter” is based on the best-selling true-crime nonfiction book “Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit” by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. The first two seasons starred Holt McCallany, Jonathan Groff and Anna Torv as fictionalized versions of key people behind the formation of the FBI team and included depictions of some of America’s worst serial killers and their crimes.
The show debuted on Netflix in Oct. 2017. The second season, which launched last August, focused on the Atlanta murders of 1979-81. “Mindhunter” was created by Joe Penhall, who executive produced alongside Fincher.
