‘Modern Family’ Renewed; ABC Picks Up ‘Back in the Game,’ ‘Mind Games’

"Modern Family" gets fifth season

ABC has renewed "Modern Family" for a fifth  season, and picked up the pilots "Back in the Game" and "Mind Games," a spokeswoman for the network told TheWrap on Friday.

"Back in the Game" stars Maggie Lawson as a former All Star Softball player who had to abandon her sports plans after having a baby, losing her college scholarship and entering a lousy marriage. She and her son move in with her father (James Caan),  an opinionated, beer-guzzling, ex-athlete who never quite made the cut as a single father or professional baseball player.

The pilot was written by Mark and Robb Cullen (“Lucky,” “Las Vegas”), who also executive produce along with directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (“Bad Santa,” “Crazy, Stupid, Love”) and Aaron Kaplan (“The Neighbors”).

"Mind Games" stars Steve Zahn and Christian Slater as brothers who run an agency committed to solving clients’ problems using the hard science of psychological manipulation. One is a former professor and a world-renowned expert in the field of human behavior. He has a checkered history due to bipolar disorder, which sometimes results in quirky, manic episodes. The older brother is a slick con man who spent time in prison.  Each in their own way knows what makes people tick.

"Mind Games" is written and executive produced by Kyle Killen, also executive produced by Keith Redman.  “Mind Games” is a 20th Century Fox Television production.  Miguel Sapochnik directed the pilot.
