MTV to Air ‘Facebook’ Doc Wednesday

But news special feels about six months too late

In a move that strikes me as about six months too late, MTV announced on Monday that its behind-the-scenes documentary on Facebook — "Diary of Facebook" — will premiere on Wednesday, March 30 at 11 p.m. (ET/PT).

The Social NetworkThe special chronicles "days in the life" of a Facebook technical engineer "named Pedram" and a consumer marketing employee, and includes interviews with founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Additionally, "viewers will get the first televised look into Facebook’s famous 24-hour 'hack-a-thon.'"

Had this come out when, say, David Fincher's "Social Network" was in theaters last fall or racking up rewards this winter, it might've interested me. Now, I don't anticipate I'll "like" it. Or even watch.

MTV Reveals the Faces Behind Facebook

“Diary of Facebook” Set to Premiere Wednesday, March 30th at 11pm ET/PT

New York, NY — March 28, 2011 — You visit it once, twice, three times a day to connect with friends and family all over the world. You’ve seen movies and countless news stories on how this technological and cultural phenomenon has changed the way we communicate, dominates the social media universe and even plays a central role in spreading political revolutions. But nothing can show you what it’s really like to live and breathe Facebook until you meet the people who work there day in and day out.

Facebook…You think you know, but you have no idea — until Wednesday, March 30th at 11pm ET/PT on MTV.

MTV today announced the premiere of “Diary of Facebook,” a behind-the-scenes special that captures never-before-seen “days in the life” of a Facebook technical engineer named Pedram and a consumer marketing employee named Erin, as well as interviews with founder Mark Zuckerberg. The “Diary of Facebook” takes a deeper look into the people, culture and soul of the company. From employees’ experiences working on site protection and being challenged to innovate via unorthodox methods to gaining the “Facebook 30,” the audience will walk away with an intimate look at the personalities and day-to-day dealings of one of the world’s most talked about companies and social platforms.

Additionally, viewers will get the first televised look into Facebook’s famous 24-hour “hack-a-thon.” Used as an exercise to instigate learning and drive creativity, the hack-a-thon has just one rule: You are not allowed to work on anything that is part of your day job. Watch while some people create, code and produce product innovations, while others find inspiration in cooking, juggling, drawing and more, as they attempt to make it through the manic 24 hour period and make their ideas a reality.

The “Diary of Facebook” will also show how the social network has impacted people’s personal lives by highlighting specific stories from Stories.Facebook.com. From finding long-lost biological family members, providing a breast cancer patient with hope and support to giving a voice to a man stricken with A.L.S., the intrinsic, yet not immediately obvious power of the platform is revealed through Facebook users’ own emotional words and stories — which have a profound, lasting impact on the employees.

“Diary of Facebook” is Executive Produced by Dave Sirulnick and Marshall Eisen. Andrew Huang is the Supervising Producer and Director. Jonathan Mussman is Executive in Charge of Production. Joy Huang and Evelien Kong are Producers. “Diary of Facebook” is a production of MTV News and Docs.
