MTV Apologizes to GLAAD for ‘Jersey Shore’ Special

Channel will edit out transgender jokes for future airings

MTV has apologized to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) for a reunion special that the group claimed made fun of transgender people.

In the episode, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino is shown flirting with an unidentified club patron, who his castmates repeatedly call a “a tra**y,”

The group also objected to host Julissa Bermudez's questions to Sorrentino, In the special, Bermudez asks: “Who was that tranny?! What was up with that?!”

MTV told GLAAD that the special will be edited – and the segment removed – after this current rotation cycle.

"We appreciate GLAAD voicing concern about the 'Jersey Shore' reunion special," MTV said in a statement. "The segment in question was certainly not meant to be insensitive, but in retrospect we realize that it was offensive to some viewers. We sincerely apologize."

GLAAD said that in addition to apologizing, MTV executives had agreed to meet with the group to become better informed about transgender issues.
