Matthew McConaughey is looking to continue his remarkable recent run of performances in films like "Magic Mike" and "Killer Joe" with a starring turn as a mysterious fugitive in "Mud."
The latest picture from Jeff Nichols, the director behind the gripping and disturbing 2011 drama "Take Shelter," is set below the Mason-Dixon line, and the new trailer for the film is a veritable stew of thick Southern accents. Not only is McConaughey around dripping molasses flavored words of advice, Reese Witherspoon is also on hand to offer up magnolia scented dialogue.
The movie received strong reviews when it debuted last year at the Cannes Film Festival, with many critics hailing both the performances and Nichols' stylistic direction.
"An atmospheric thriller and coming-of-age tale set on a slow bend in the Mississippi river, Mud has the look and feel of an American indie classic," Jason Solomons wrote in The Observer.
"Mud" follows two young boys who encounter a strange man (McConaughey) hiding in the woods. They form a bond with the man and gradually find out he is on the run from both his violent past and a pack of bounty hunters.
"There are things you can't get away with in this world and there are things you can," McConaughey says at one point in the trailer.
Audiences will find out if "Mud" makes out like a bandit or collapses under pressure when the film hits theaters on April 26.
