NBC Schedule a Lesson in Sharing

A number of series will split time slots between fall and spring.

NBC finally released the details of its 2009-10 season lineup Tuesday, outlining a schedule that will be crowded without a 10 p.m. hour available for scripted shows and somewhat bisected due to February’s Winter Olympics coverage.

As a result, a number of series will find themselves sharing time periods and rotating in and out of the schedule.

In the fall, for example, “Heroes” will kick Mondays off at 8 p.m., leading into the new emergency-responders-themed “Trauma.”

However, after the Olympics end Feb. 28, “Chuck” will take over Mondays at 8 and lead into the post-apocalyptic “Day One” at 9.

On Wednesdays, NBC will start the fall with new hour-long dramedy “Parenthood” at 8, leading into “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” But in the spring, new hospital drama “Mercy” will be leading into “SVU.”

Meanwhile, NBC will start the fall with the half-hour “SNL Weekend Update” kicking off its Thursday comedy block at 8 and new single-cam comedy “Community” closing things out at 9:30. After the Olympics are over, “Weekend Update” will go away, veteran “30 Rock” will return to its 9:30 throne, and “Community” will rotate over to the 8 p.m. slot.

Other springtime rotations will include the Jerry Seinfeld-produced reality show “The Marriage Ref” joining the Sunday-night schedule at 8 p.m.

On each weeknight, the “Jay Leno Show” will occupy the 10 p.m. slot.

“NBC has picked up more scripted shows than last season even with ‘The Jay Leno Show’ at 10 p.m.,” said Ben Silverman, co-chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios.

“We’re incredibly excited about our new and returning series and have more comedy programming than anyone else, as well as two of the most buzzed about new shows, ‘Community’ and ‘Parenthood.’ We can’t wait for the fall.”

With Leno plugged in at 10 p.m. each night, recently launched cop show “Southland” will be moved from Thursday to Friday nights at 9.

Bubble shows returning to the schedule include “Chuck” and the venerable “Law & Order” flagship show. “Medium,” however, was left off the fall schedule.

Following is the NBC fall schedule, followed by the midseason schedule, including the 2010 Olympics. New shows are in upper-case.
