NBC’s Sochi Olympics Viewership Down 12 Percent

Ratings lower than Vancouver games, but 6 percent higher than Torino Olympics

NBC’s Sochi Olympics coverage was down 12 percent in viewers from the Vancouver games, but up 6 percent from the winter games in Torino which, like the Sochi games, were tape-delayed.

The games ended Sunday.

Symbolizing the end of the 11-day tournament, the Closing Ceremony (8:33-10:36 p.m. ET) averaged 15.1 million viewers, up 2 percent from Torino (14.8 million) — the last European and thus tape-delayed Olympics. But the audience size was down 29 percent versus Vancouver’s Closing Ceremony, which also benefitted from a classic Team USA-Canada overtime gold medal hockey game.

Preceding the Sochi flame being snuffed out, the “Nancy & Tonya” documentary (7-8:33 p.m. ET) reeled in 12.7 million viewers, second on network TV only to the Closing Ceremony.

Complete Olympic ratings, viewership and digital metrics will be released on Tuesday.
