NBC’s live production of “The Sound of Music” has cast Audra McDonald, Laura Benanti and Christian Borle, the network said Monday.

Five-time Tony winner McDonald (“Porgy and Bess,” “A Raisin in the Sun”) will play Mother Abbess in the production, which will air Dec. 5. Benanti, whose credits include “Law & Order: SVU” and “Go On,” will play Elsa Schrader, while Borle, who starred in the network’s ill-fated musical series “Smash,” will play Max Dettweiler.

The trio joins a cast that also includes “American Idol” favorite Carrie Underwood, who’ll play Maria, and “True Blood” star Stephen Moyer, who’ll play World War I hero Capt. Georg Von Trapp.

The three-hour production will be based on the orginal 1959 production of “The Sound of Music.”
