Will the new NCIS boss please stand up?

No Mark Harmon? No problem. At least not for the first episode of CBS’ hit crime procedural following the departure of Leroy Gibbs.

“NCIS” added 20,000 “live” viewers this week vs. last. Of course, last week’s exit of the Harmon character came as a surprise, so one could rightfully argue that Monday night’s episode had more intrigue and urgency to view.

In any event, while CBS was the No. 1 broadcast network in terms of total audience, it settled for a third-place tie with Fox in the adults 18-49 demo’s ratings. That said, the first and second-place networks in that demo were both boosted in one local market apiece with some NFL football.

ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” game, the Buffalo Bills vs. the Tennessee Titans, aired on the ABC affiliate in Buffalo. It aired on Fox in Nashville. Therefore, the below Nielsen numbers for ABC and Fox should be considered subject to heavier-than-normal adjustment.

ABC was first in ratings with a 0.7 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, but third in total viewers with an average of 4.1 million, according to preliminary numbers. “Dancing With the Stars” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. put up a 0.8 rating and 5.1 million total viewers. At 10, an ABC News special “Queens of Hip-Hop” had a 0.4 rating and 2 million total viewers.

NBC was second in ratings with a 0.6 and in total viewers with 4.9 million. “The Voice” from 8 to 10 averaged a 0.7 rating and 6.1 million total viewers. At 10, “Ordinary Joe” got a 0.4 rating and 2.5 million total viewers

CBS and Fox tied for third in ratings, both with a 0.5. CBS was first in total viewers with 5.9 million, Fox was fourth with 3.3 million.

For CBS, “The Neighborhood” at 8 had a 0.6 rating and 5.1 million total viewers. At 8:30, “Bob Hearts Abishola” got a 0.5 rating and 4.9 million total viewers. “NCIS” at 9 drew a 0.6 rating and 7.39 million total viewers, up from 7.37 million the prior week. “NCIS: Hawai’i” at 10 received a 0.5 rating and 5.3 million total viewers.

For Fox, “9-1-1” at 8 earned a 0.8 rating and 5.1 million total viewers. At 9, “The Big Leap” had a 0.3 rating and 1.5 million total viewers.

The CW was fifth in ratings with a 0.1 and in total viewers with 365,000. From 8 to 9:30, a “Just for Laughs” special averaged a 0.1 rating and 388,000 total viewers. A rerun followed.

We do not have early Nielsen numbers for Spanish-language broadcast networks Univision and Telemundo.
