Gina Rodriguez Needs ‘One Last Epic Day With My Girls’ in ‘Someone Great’ Trailer (Video)

LaKeith Stanfield, Brittany Snow and DeWanda Wise also star in the Paul Feig-produced Netflix film

Netflix carved out another successful lane last year, planting its flag in the romantic comedy genre, with hits like “Set It Up” and “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.” Now the streaming giant is ready to move on to “Someone Great.”

Netflix released the first trailer for its latest rom-com, “Someone Great,” on Wednesday.

The film, which was directed by first-time feature film director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, stars Gina Rodriguez, LaKeith Stanfield, Brittany Snow and DeWanda Wise (“She’s Gotta Have It”).

In the trailer, aspiring music journalist Jenny (Rodriguez) is devastated when her boyfriend of nine years (Stanfield) decides to call it quits rather than do long-distance after Jenny lands her dream job at an iconic magazine in San Francisco. Cue the friends.

“Basically I just really want you to call your place of work and tell them you have your period or something and just come over to my apartment,” Rodriguez’s Jenny tells her two best friends Erin (Wise) and Blair (Snow) after her break up. “I leave in a week and then I turn 30 and then I die, probably. I need one last epic day with my girls.”

“Someone Great” is a story of friendship, love and what it means to let go of your 20s and journey into adulthood. “Life is about growing up, turning up and moving on,” the trailer says in text across the screen.

“This is the end of an era, everything is changing,” Jenny tells her friends during a night out.

Netflix’s co-heads of Original Independent Film, Matt Brodlie and Ian Bricke, told TheWrap in February that they saw an opportunity to hone in on the forgotten romantic comedy genre, which has seemed to pay off so far, helping to fuel a resurgence in the genre.

“Someone Great” looks to take a slightly different approach than the typical girl meets boy scenario, instead focusing on the break-up and growth thereafter.

The film was produced by Paul Feig and Jessie Henderson for Feig’s production company Feigco Entertainment, as well as Emily Gipson at Gina Rodriguez’s I Can & I Will Productions company, and Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron at Likely Story.

“Someone Great” hits Netflix on April 19. Watch the trailer above.
