Netflix has won the bidding war for the horror movie “The Unsound,” which “Shazam!” director David F. Sandberg will direct, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

It is based on BOOM! Studios’ graphic novel by Cullen Bunn “(The Sixth Gun”). Of course, Sandberg is not new to the horror genre, having directed “Lights Out” and “Annabelle: Creation,” the latter of which grossed $450 million worldwide. “Lights Out” started as a short film.

Skylar James (“29 Mole Street”) is writing the screenplay. Sandberg and Lotta Losten will produce through their production company Mangata, alongside BOOM! Studios’ Ross Richie and Stephen Christy. Executive producers are Adam Yoelin and James.

“The Unsound” follows a psychiatrist who returns to the insane asylum where her mother once worked. However, her mother is now a patient. As the psychiatrist discovers the hard truths about her past, she begins to realize that the hospital is hiding secrets of its own.

BOOM! Studios is home the largest comic book library IP outside of Marvel and DC, and has a first look deal at Fox/Disney. They are currently in development on “Goldie Vance” with Rashida Jones directing.

Deadline first reported the news.
