New ‘Alien: Covenant’ Trailer Confirms John Denver Exists in the ‘Alien’ Universe (Video)

Watch out for “Sunshine” on your shoulder bursting out of your stomach

A swarm of new trailers for “Alien: Covenant” made their way online Monday, but Twentieth Century Fox saved the best for last.

The new spot that debuted tonight during the NCAA Basketball Finals is suitably moody, suitably creepy, and just the right side of suitably gross.

But, more importantly, it confirms an important new part of “Alien” lore: John Denver exists in this universe.

Denver’s classic “Take Me Home” aside, the trailer has plenty of other highlights.

The otherworldly vistas from the colony world the film’s protagonists end up on are gorgeous, as is the ominous sense of “abandoned” conveyed by the empty habitats. But the pink, fleshy, lamprey-esque mouth of the facehugger might be the best touch — the Xenomorphs were always designed to have a subtle, hard-to-define but creepily-sexual quality, and the wet flesh of the facehugger ramps that up nicely.

Directed by Ridley Scott, “Alien Covenant” stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demian Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, and Benjamin Rigby.

James Franco also makes an appearance in the film, which hits theaters May 19.
