New ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Trailer: Monkey Diplomacy Fails, World Goes Bananas (Video)

Jason Clarke and Gary Oldman find themselves at odds in a world filled with super smart simians

While the first movie in the new “Planet of the Apes” reboot series was about the dangers of unchecked genetic engineering — domestic policy, really — the new entry into the franchise looks to take on international relations and society’s frequent rush to war.

Fox on Thursday dropped a new trailer for the upcoming “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” a gritty monkey action pic directed by Matt Reeves, and the thing is a work of beautiful nightmares.

The film picks up four years after the events of the first, when James Franco turned his ape Caesar into a genius and then all the other apes got the genius virus and things went crazy. Cities were destroyed and bridges filled with rampaging marvels of biology and evolution.

Now, the apes rule the place — they eventually all got smart and took over the world — and lush trees and forestation grow over the concrete jungles. A small band of humans remain, led by the clashing Jason Clarke (he’s for constructive dialogue with his monkey oppressors) and Gary Oldman (more of a shoot first, ask questions later kind of guy).

Unfortunately, as we’ve seen throughout human history, the one advocating war wins that argument.

The film, which also stars Keri Russell and Judy Greer, hits theaters on July 11.
