New York Times, BuzzFeed Team Up for Presidential Conventions

Old media will join with new to cover the Republican Convention in Florida and the Democratic Convention in North Carolina

Old media is getting an assist from new as the presidential election heats up.

The New York Times, bastion of print journalism, is partnering with BuzzFeed, curator of all things viral, to expand its video coverage of the Democratic and Republican national conventions, the companies said Monday.

The coverage will include video segments featuring Times opinion writers and columnists, along with pieces focusing on Ben Smith, editor in chief of BuzzFeed, and members of his political team. The two publications will also partner on videos in advance of the big political shows.

The Democratic Convention is scheduled to take place on September 2 in Charlotte, North Carolina, a crucial swing state that President Barack Obama hopes to hold in his column.

The Republican Convention will be held on August 27 in Tampa, Florida — another state that is seen as key to challenger Mitt Romney's bid for the White House.

“We think BuzzFeed’s energy and keen ear for how political stories play out in the social sphere will be a valuable and interesting contribution to The Times’s video presence,”  Jim Roberts, assistant managing editor of The New York Times, said in a statement.
