The New Yorker’s Take on DOMA: Great for Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie

Confirmed bachelors Bert and Ernie have lived together for decades

The New Yorker knows a couple of confirmed bachelors who seem very happy about the Supreme Court's gay marriage rulings.

"Sesame Street" stars Bert and Ernie grace the magazine's latest cover, which addresses the Supreme Court's recent decision to curtail parts of the Defense of Marriage Act and end California's Proposition 8.

So much speculation has swirled about Bert and Ernie that Sesame Street publicists released a carefully worded statement in 2011 insisting the pair are "best friends" who "do not have a sexual orientation."

The official denial hasn't stopped some fans from noting that they share a bedroom (though they sleep in separate beds) and seem not to prefer the company of women. On the cover, they are shown watching the news together, with Ernie's head resting on Bert's shoulder.

Jack Hunter drew the cover and submitted it to the magazine through Tumblr. "This is great for our kids, a moment we can all celebrate," he said.
