Nicolas Cage’s Prehistoric Family Faces the End of the World in ‘The Croods’ Trailer (Video)

And Cage's character hopes his mother-in-law may not survive

Providing the world makes it past the Mayan Apocalypse (scheduled to begin on Dec. 21), we will get to watch Nicolas Cage face the end of prehistoric times in DreamWorks Animation's "The Croods."

A new trailer for the family comedy has been released and it provides some pretty dark humor revolving around the death of an aging mother-in-law.

The film follows humanity's first family navigating a strange, new landscape to escape extinction after spending a lifetime sheltered in a cave. Grug, the patriarch voiced by Cage, is terrified of the new world and unwilling to follow a guide named Guy (Ryan Reynolds) toward far-off safety.

That is, until his wife's mother, Gran (Cloris Leachman), predicts, "I'll never live long enough to get there."

Since it's supposed to appeal to viewers of all ages, Grug will probably appreciate Gran by the end of their journey, but who knows.

Emma Stone, Clark Duke and Catherine Keener also lend their voices to the film that hits theaters on March 22, 2013.
