Nipsey Hussle Vigil Erupts in Violence: 19 People Injured, Police Say

Rapper was shot in front of his L.A. store, police said Sunday

Nineteen people were injured during a vigil for slain rapper Nipsey Hussle in Los Angeles on Monday, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department told TheWrap.

Among the injuries, 14 were minor and five were serious, police said.

In tweets Monday night, police said that they were “attempting to restore order” amid the “chaos” at the vigil, which took place near the corner of Crenshaw and Slauson.

The LAPD said that reports of shots fired at the vigil “do not appear to be accurate.”

Fire officials said most of those hospitalized appeared to have suffered “trample injuries” as people fell or were knocked to the ground during the panic as people fled the scene.

“We understand the community is mourning and we feel for your loss,” the LAPD said in a tweet. “We are asking for everyone to follow the officers [sic] directions and disperse from the immediate area.”

Police confirmed on Sunday that Hussle, né Ermias Asghedom, was shot and killed Sunday outside his Marathon Clothing store in South Los Angeles. He was 33.

Two other men at the scene were also shot and are in serious condition. Lt. Chris Ramirez of the Los Angeles Police Department said a black male suspect was at large, according to CBS News.

On Monday, the Los Angeles County coroner confirmed that the rapper had died from gunshots to his head and torso.

A police press conference is scheduled for 8:30 am tomorrow, police said.
