One Direction, Miley Cyrus Kick Off MTV Video Music Awards Summer Song Celebration

Robin Thicke will also perform at Video Music Awards

MTV is turning up the heat and celebrating the best of summer pop music with special performances and appearances by Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke and One Direction tied to the upcoming Video Music Awards. 

The music network said the hit-makers will strut their stuff live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on August 25 . MTV will also use the occasion to present its award for “Best Song of the Summer." The winners will be selected by viewers for the first time via social media services like Twitter, Vine and Instagram. Voting begins Tuesday.

Nominees include Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” featuring Pharrell, Calvin Harris' “I Need Your Love,” Selena Gomez‘s “Come & Get It,” One Direction’s “Best Song Ever,” and Thicke’s  “Blurred Lines” featuring T.I. and Pharrell.

To celebrate the performances and appearances, MTV Hits, MTV’s 24-hour music channel will feature blocks of videos from Cyrus, Thicke and One Direction.

Other performers at the Video Music Awards include Lady Gaga, Kanye West and Katy Perry.
