Original ‘Flowers in the Attic’ Star Kristy Swanson Weighs in on Lifetime Remake, Kiernan Shipka

”Good job,“ the actress who played Cathy in the 1987 film based on the V.C. Andrews novel says

Lifetime’s adaptation of V.C. Andrews’ cult classic “Flowers in the Attic” won over at least one fan of the 1987 film — star Kristy Swanson.

Swanson weighed in on the movie that aired on Saturday.

“#FlowersintheAttic I am happy to watch the remake on @lifetimetv it brings back fond memories of the original film : ) good job lifetime xo,” she said on Twitter.

Arguably, Swanson’s portrayal set the bar for Cathy, the oldest girl of four children forced to live in an attic by their grandmother and later swept up into a incestuous relationship with her brother.

Swanson approved of “Mad Men” actress Kiernan Shipka‘s performance in the role, as well.

“@kiernanshipka good job honey on the role of Cathy in #FlowersintheAttic proud of you. Xoxoxo Kristy #vcandrews,” she tweeted.

The 1987 film enjoyed a good amount of box office success, though critics panned it at the time. Swanson co-starred with Victoria Tennant as mother Corrine and Louise Fletcher as grandmother Olivia.

Lifetime’s “Flowers in the Attic” executive producer Michele Weiss told TheWrap why she felt Shipka was the right actress for the role.

“With Kiernan, we had the confidence of knowing the difficult subject matter she dealt with on ‘Mad Men’ starting when she was six years old,” Weiss said. “She could handle that, embrace it and give it depth.

Lifetime is already developing the sequel to “Flowers in the Attic” called “Petals on the Wind.”
