Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt Take Flight in First ‘Passengers’ Trailer (Video)

Morten Tyldum directs the sci-fi romance due in theaters December 21

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt showed they have steamy chemistry on the big screen in the first trailer for Sony’s sci-fi romance “Passengers,” released Tuesday in advance of its opening in theaters on December 21.

Morten Tyldum (“The Imitation Game”) directs the Village Roadshow production, which stars Lawrence as Aurora, a writer from New York who has joined a 120-year, maiden space voyage to Homestead Colony II. Pratt’s character, a mechanic named Jim, is also on the vessel, filled with more than 5,000 passengers.

The two are thrown together by chance when their sleeping pods malfunction and they wake up early — roughly 30 years into their epic journey.

Coming from two very different classes on the ship, Jim and Aurora aren’t friends at first — but they soon seem to spark to each other in a big, big way even as their budding romance is threatened by the imminent collapse of the ship and the discovery of the truth behind why they awakened in the first place.

It’s the first onscreen pairing for Lawrence, an Oscar winner for “Silver Lining Playbook,” and Pratt, whose Western reboot “The Magnificent Seven” rides into theaters this Friday.

The cast also includes Michael Sheen, Laurence Fishburne and Aurora Perrineau. Jon Spaihts wrote the screenplay.

Producers include Neal H. Moritz, Stephen Hamel, Michael Maher and Ori Marmur. Lynwood Spinks served as executive producer.

“Passengers” is due to open on December 21.
