‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’ Gets Premiere Date – Watch ‘Evil Awaken’ in the First Teaser (Video)

TCA 2020: Showtime sequel to debut this spring

Showtime announced that its “Penny Dreadful” sequel, “City of Angels” will premiere on Sunday, April 26.

The pay cable network also released the first teaser for the series, which stars “Game of Thrones” alum Natalie Dormer and Daniel Zovatto. Watch the video above.

Showtime describes the series as “a spiritual descendant” of the original “Penny Dreadful,” which was set in Victorian-era London. The new series “opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension.” Dormer plays Magda, a shape-shifting demon and “agent of chaos.”

Along with Dormer and Zovatto, the series  stars Nathan Lane, Michael Gladis, Lorenza Izzo, Adam Rodriguez, Thomas Kretschmann, Dominic Sherwood and Ethan Peck. Rory Kinnear, who played Frankenstein’s Monster on the original “Penny Dreadful,” will play Dr. Peter Craft, a successful German pediatrician and the head of the German-American Bund, an organization he hopes will keep the United States isolated from the growing threat of war in Europe.

Here is the logline for the series from Showtime:

When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Lane) become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

“Penny Dreadful” creator John Logan is writing and executive producing “City of Angels”. Michael Aguilar (“Kidding”) also serves as an executive producer.

Along with Logan and Aguilar, “Penny Dreadful” is executive produced by Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris, both of Neal Street Productions. Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions will produce, and James Bagley will serve as co-executive producer. Paco Cabezas is set to direct multiple episodes.
