The two diaries were unearthed during a police search of Hoffman’s Greenwich Village. They contain stream of consciousness musings on drug deals, Narcotics Anonymous meetings and personal issues, according to NBC News.
Hoffman died of an apparent drug overdose two weeks ago, although an initial autopsy was inconclusive. He was 46.
The actor attended rehab in 2013 after more than two decades of reportedly remaining clean. Many of the diary entries appear to have been written in an altered state.
“It seems he did at least part of it in rehab,” a source tells NBC. “It definitely contained some soul-searching. But there is also a fair amount of rambling that doesn’t make sense.”
They also detail his deteriorating relationship with companion Mimi O’Donnell, the mother of his three children, according to the New York Post.
A spokesman for the NYPD did not immediately respond to requests for comment, nor did the late actor’s publicist.
