Piers Morgan on the Gender Wage Gap: ‘I Don’t Understand Why Men Are Taking Pay Cuts’

“If you deliver ratings/advertising, you get paid accordingly. If you don’t, you get fired,” British media personality tweets

Piers Morgan weighed in on the topic of gender wage equality on Thursday, saying that he doesn’t “understand why men are taking pay cuts.”

British media personality Morgan made his pronouncement via Twitter, in response to a report that Channel 4 News host Jon Snow had taken a 25 percent “gender pay cut.”

“I don’t understand why men are taking pay cuts to establish ‘gender equality.’ Snow was worth his previous salary – he’s brilliant at his job – and any women who are as good as him should be paid the same, or more if they’re better,” Morgan wrote. “THAT is equality, surely?”

Morgan wasn’t done on the topic, even disagreeing with a Twitter user who agreed with him.

“Got to agree with you Piers but you must admit that all of you guys are vastly overpaid for what you do,” the Twitter user wrote.

“No, I don’t. It’s market force in the commercial TV game,” Morgan responded. “If you deliver ratings/advertising, you get paid accordingly. If you don’t, you get fired.”

The topic of equal pay, particularly in the entertainment industry, has been a subject of much discussion in recent years, with “Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence, former E! personality Catt Sadler and many others taking aim at the disparity in pay between men and women.

More recently, on Wednesday, “Saturday Night Live” alum Rob Schneider took a humorous jab at the topic, declaring, “I, Rob Schneider, will no longer take projects that do not pay women equally. Even if that means lowering the woman’s salary substantially” in a tweet whose humor appeared to go over a number of commenters’ heads.
