PilotWatch 2010: A Killer Drama at ABC

Network gives thumbs up to “187 Detroit,” a crime hour about a city with one of the highest murder rates in the nation

As if Detroit didn’t have enough image problems: ABC has greenlit production on a pilot for an hourlong drama focusing on the city’s murder problem.

Technically, "187 Detroit" revolves around Motor City’s top homicide division. It’s described as a "real but humorous" hour that will be told via a fictional documentary crew (a la "Modern Family" or "The Office.")

But the show will also no doubt shine a spotlight on the fact that Detroit is on the verge of stealing away the title of most murders per capita from Baltimore. As of June, Detroit was running ahead of Baltimore for the murder bragging rights. Final stats should be available this month.

Jason Richman wrote the pilot for "187." He, along with David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, will serve as executive producers.

The project is from ABC Studios.
