Not since "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" has a relationship been as entertainingly complicated as the one between Spencer Pratt and Al Roker.
Six months removed from Roker’s rough "Today" show treatment of the MTV star and his wife, Heidi Montag, Pratt delivered a series of pointed barbs at the NBC morning-show co-host via Twitter on Monday.
The tweeted assault came after a Monday "Today" appearance by Pratt and Montag reportedly was canceled last-minute due to what show producers called a scheduling conflict.
Pratt’s response was, well, barbed.
"WEATHERMAN! I thought you were out of town today getting your stomach stapled again," read one Pratt tweet.
Roker’s multiple marriages (he’s had three) also came under exaggerated attack: "Is it true you have been married 6 times?" Pratt wrote. "I’m sure all your wives left you when they realized you were abusive to women! Sicko!"
Of course, when accusing someone of sexism, it’s always great to follow it up with a bit of overt ageism.
"You look very sick," Pratt noted. "Do you always look like your (sic) about to die? How old are you 97? You should retire asap — No one would even know."
Pratt later softened his tone, tweeting, "I’m feeling very regretful for saying HATEFULL (sic) tweets towards a good man!!"
Roker didn’t respond to Pratt’s prodding.
The bad blood stems from a June 15 "Today" interview, during which the NBC morning show co-host repeatedly asked Montag if she was "proud" of some of her onscreen and off-screen behavoir. He also accused Pratt of being a "jerk."
