‘Promised Land’ Trailer Features Matt Damon as Morally Conflicted Oil Industry Hatchet Man

Frances McDormand, John Krasinski, Rosemarie DeWitt and Hal Holbrook co-star in Gus Van Sant drama

Matt Damon may work for the bad guys in "Promised Land," but based on the latest trailer for the Oscar contender, deep down he's really a good dude at heart.

The environmental drama features a bevy of Oscar-bait co-stars including past nominees Frances McDormand ("Fargo") and Hal Holbrook ("Into the Wild"). John Krasinski ("The Office") is also on hand. And the film again reunites Damon with his "Good Will Hunting" director Gus Van Sant. There's even a scene where Damon and Rosemarie DeWitt exchange witty pick-up lines in a bar that is reminiscent of the caramels exchange between Damon and Minnie Driver — apparently Damon is unbeatable when it comes to hitting on women in bars.

But the mood in "Promised Land" seems far more populist and angry than the gooier "Good Will Hunting." The film has Damon as a corporate mister fix-it for an oil company moving into a small town to try to snap up land rights, wrecking havoc on the ecosystem while dipping its beak into that sweet crude. There will be moral dilemmas!

"Promised Land" hits theaters on Dec. 28.
