Home Entertainment Spending Down 4% Through Q3

Sales of discs decline 8 percent through the first nine months of the year, Digital Entertainment Group reports

Sales and rentals of movies and TV shows on discs and downloads dropped 4 percent to $12.6 million through the first nine months of the year, the studio-backed trade association Digital Entertainment Group reported Thursday.

Sales of packaged home entertainment media — i.e. DVD and Blu-ray titles — dropped 8 percent through the third quarter, but Blu-ray invidually grew 80 percent to $1 billion.

Internet sales of packaged media grew 37 percent to $432 million, while video-on-demand distribution climbed 23 percent to $1.7 billion, according to the DEG.
