Quentin Tarantino’s Best of 2010: ‘Toy Story 3’

Three animated films end up on a list where “Robin Hood” and “Kick Ass” make the cut but “Inception” and “Black Swan” don’t

We were all up to our necks in Top 10 lists as the year closed out, but here's an intriguing one with which to kick off the new year:

Toy Story 3Quentin Tarantino has chosen the best films of 2010, and sitting atop his quirky and far-ranging list is the further adventures of Buzz and Woody, Lee Unkrich's "Toy Story 3."

And that wasn't the only animated movie that the "Pulp Fiction" and "Inglourious Basterds" director and four-time Oscar nominee (and one-time winner) loved. In addition to giving Pixar's latest hit the top position, he also put Disney's "Tangled" in his Top Five and added DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon" at number 17.

(Since Tarantino has always been known for being garrulous, he didn't stop after his top 10 — instead, he added another 10 films to make it a Top 20.)

Tarantino's list includes several Oscar faves, including "The Social Network" at number two and "True Grit" at number six. But he gives it his own spin: the awards contenders "The Fighter," "The King's Speech" and "The Kids Are All Right" may come in at numbers 14, 15 and 16, respectively, but they trail the triumvirate of "Kick Ass," "Knight and Day" and "Get Him to the Greek."

He also includes a few foreign films ("Animal Kingdom" in third place, "I Am Love" in fourth, "Enter the Void" in 10th) and action flicks, the comedies "Greenberg" and "Cyrus" in his Top 10, and even the much-maligned "Robin Hood."

Missing in action: Chris Nolan's "Inception," Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan," and the Sofia Coppola film "Somewhere," which won the grand prize from a Venice Film Festival jury chaired by Tarantino.

The Tarantino Archives, which first printed the list, offered only one comment from the garrulous director about one of his choices: Gaspar Noe's "Enter the Void," he said, contained “hands down best credit scene of the year … Maybe best credit scene of the decade. One of the greatest in cinema history.”
