Dwayne Johnson’s upcoming film “Rampage” is a ridiculously fun monster movie that also has plenty of heart, TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven and Umberto Gonzalez say. But, they say, just go into the film expecting tons of destruction, explosions and laughs — and don’t take the movie too seriously.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan shines, and Umberto thinks Morgan’s “wiseass cowboy” performance steals the movie. But Morgan is supported by great turns from other stars Malin Akerman, Naomie Harris, Joe Manganiello, and of course Dwayne Johnson.
But the film’s big standout is Jason Liles’ mo-cap performance as George the albino gorilla, who ends up becoming one of the film’s giant rampaging creatures. George is one of the best-looking CGI monsters to date, and as Beatrice and Umberto note, the character’s relationship with Johnson’s Davis Okoye gives the film unexpected depth.
It certainly could’ve been just another soulless CGI monster film, but instead, the great actors and funny one-liners elevate it. Yes, it’s over the top, but so is the video game on which it is based, and the film is ridiculous, fun, and a great way to be entertained after a busy week at work.
Directed by Brad Peyton, “Rampage” hits theaters on Friday.
