Randy Travis‘ voice was quite the sweet sound to the crowd at the Country Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Three years after suffering a stroke that nearly took his life, Travis wowed attendees by singing “Amazing Grace” at the ceremony, the Associated Press reports.

Travis, 57, was on hand at the Nashville ceremony to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, along with Charlie Daniels and record producer Fred Foster.

During the ceremony, the singer’s wife, Mary Davis-Travis reflected on the life-threatening stroke, which was caused by a viral infection and led to a six-month hospital stay, along with multiple procedures and operations.

“Randy stared death in the face, but death blinked,” she said. “Today, God’s proof of a miracle stands before you.”

Alan Jackson, who performed Travis’ “On the Other Hand” as tribute to the singer during the ceremony, discussed touring with Travis in the 1990s, recalling the “crazy” reaction that Travis elicited from female fans.

“When he sang, the women were screaming and fainting, and it was crazy,” Jackson said. “I loved it. Someone singing real country music and having that effect and selling all those records, it just made me so happy.”
