Ratings: ‘American Idol’ Holds Steady at Top While Univision Gains

Spanish-language outlet bests networks in some time slots

"American Idol" dominated as usual Wednesday, but Spanish-language network Univision posted strong gains to beat some of the major networks in different time slots, according to preliminary numbers.

FOX, as expected, still dominated the evening with "American Idol," which from 8-10 p.m. netted a 7.5 rating//21 share in the adults 18-49 demographic and 23.5 million total viewers, versus last week's 7.7/22 and 23.4 million.

CBS also held fairly steady. "Survivor: Redemption Island" at 8 experienced a 6 percent in the demo, with 2.9/9 and 10.5 million total viewers. Last week it had a 3.0/9 and 10.7 million viewers. "Criminal Minds" the following hour was also narrowly down from its last original airing on March 16, at 3.4/9 in the demo and 12.8 million total viewrs. Its last new episode drew a 3.6/10 and 13.6 million viewers. "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior" at 10 had a five percent uptick in the demo compared to last week, grabbing a 2.3/8 in contrast to the prior week's 2.2/6.

Univision began its primetime roster with the telenova "Eva Luna" at 8, which scored a 1.6/5 in the demo, besting last week's performance of 1.5/5 and earning the third-highest numbers in the time slot, behind "Idol" and "Survivor." The debut of "Teresa" at 9 drew a 1.8/5 in the demo, besting NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" repeat. "Triunfo del Amor" at 10 scored a 1.6/4 in the demo, ahead of ABC's "Off the Map."

On ABC, back-to-back repeats of "The Middle" at 8 and 8:30 drew a 1.5/5 and 1.5/4 in the demo, respectively, while a "Modern Family" rerun at 9 pulled a 2.0/5 in the demo. A new episode of "Mr. Sunshine" at 9:30 had a 1.4/4 in the demo and 4 million total viewers. That was down from last week's 2.2/6 and 5.9 million.

NBC's "Minute to Win It" at 8 drew a 1.1/3 in the demo, down from the previous week's 1.2/4, while its "Law & Order: SVU" repeat at 9 had a 1.1/3 in the demo. An original episode of "Law & Order: SVU" was also down from last week's performance, with a 2.4/6 in the demo compared to 2.6/7.
