(Spoiler alert: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Sunday night’s series finale of ABC’s “Revenge.”)

After four years, Emily VanCamp and Madeleine Stowe chewed their last bit of scenery as their archenemy characters faced their final fates in the series finale of ABC’s “Revenge.” The hour-long episode covered a lot of ground, and a lot of time, with not everyone surviving to the end.

There was a lot of online speculation leading up to this finale that both Amanda Clarke/Emily Thorne (VanCamp) and Victoria Grayson (Stowe) would meet their ends in the show’s closing hour, as their feud was the heart of the series.

But the show’s producers went a somewhat softer route, allowing Amanda to get away with her years of plotting and scheming, but not without paying a price.

After getting busted out of jail — and didn’t Nolan (Gabriel Mann) make that look easy — Amanda rather easily found herself face to face with her nemesis. By this point, after the near-death of her love Jack (Nick Wechsler), Amanda was seeing blood. No longer satisfied to just destroy Victoria’s life, she was set to end it.

Only a timely bullet by her father (James Tupper) saved her from becoming a murderer. But in true soap opera fashion, there was one more bullet to be fired. Dying in a pool of her own blood, Victoria grabbed the gun and shot Amanda.

It looked like viewers would get their dual “Revenge” death, but it wasn’t to be. Amanda survived the shooting and David went back to jail for killing Victoria, only to die of natural causes shortly after. But from here, Amanda did find her happy ending. She and Jack got married and she even set Nolan up as a revenge-for-hire to give his life some purpose after she’d closed the chapter on her own revenge cycle.

It was a surprisingly upbeat close for a dark series with a high body count, but one that proved satisfying to viewers. Fans got the show trending on Twitter deep into the night on Sunday, with the majority loving the twisty series’ final hour … though we weren’t the only ones who noted how easy her prison break was.

And they weren’t quite ready to let go yet, either, with many calling for a “Revenge” spin-off following Nolan on his new adventures.
