Oscar winner Russell Crowe is being eyed to star in Legendary’s “Kong: Skull Island” opposite Tom Hiddleston, TheWrap has learned. “Trainwreck” actress Brie Larson is also in talks to play the female lead in the big-budget movie.

Crowe has not read the script yet, however, as he’s waiting for a new draft. Still, he’s at the top of Legendary’s list of actors to replace last year’s awards darlings Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons, who left “Skull Island” several weeks ago.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“Kings of Summer”) is set to direct from a script by John Gatins and Max Borenstein. Legendary had aimed to start production in the fall but cameras may not start rolling until early next year. The film will be released by Universal on March 10, 2017.

Crowe recently wrapped Shane Black’s “The Nice Guys” with Russell Crowe, and he’ll soon be seen in the indie “Fathers and Daughters” alongside Amanda Seyfried and Aaron Paul.

He’s represented by WME and attorney Alan Hergott.
