Sam Champion Blasts Morning Show ‘Hysteria’: It Needs More Actual News, Less Fluff

“Morning television is even getting to the point where I need a costume malfunction moment, it’s getting that much to a hysteria,” says former ‘Good Morning America’ meteorologist

Sam Champion’s thoughts on morning TV are far different since he left “Good Morning America” for his own Weather Channel morning show.

Appearing on HuffPost Live Thursday, Champion rattled down the list of unimportant things you’ll find on morning shows, like the cast of the Housewives, a dancing star, a musical concert, shopping items, etc.

“That’s morning television, but it isn’t, and it shouldn’t be, because that’s not what I need to get ready for my day,” Champion said.

He talks about stories that are actually important for people to know, like the connection between environmental factors and asthma; a story that Champion says morning TV shows constantly nix.

“They’re gonna say, ‘no I need something to explode or flash,’” he said about morning show producers. “Morning television is even getting to the point where I need a costume malfunction moment; it’s getting that much to a hysteria that everything has to be flashing all the time, everything has to be moving all the time.”

Champion left “GMA” close to a year ago to host his own morning show at the Weather Channel–“AMHQ.” The program cut staffers just four months after launching amidst up and down ratings.
