Sam Worthington was arrested Sunday for punching a photographer in the face, New York City police told TheWrap.

The “Avatar” star was released on a desk appearance ticket and faces assault and misdemeanor charges. His court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.

The incident escalated after photographer Sheng Li allegedly kicked Worthington’s female companion. The altercation took place in Greenwich Village after 5 p.m., police said.  Li was also arrested for assault, harassment and reckless endangerment.

A spokesman for Worthington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Australian actor has signed on to star in three “Avatar” sequels and will appear opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in the action film “Sabotage.”
