Samantha Bee has to wonder where Americans got the idea that voter fraud is a widespread problem, including what President Trump says were three million illegal voters and some who were registered, but were dead.
On Wednesday night’s episode of “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” the host addressed controversies surrounding Donald Trump’s “Commission on Election Integrity” and the president’s “obsession” with illegal voters.
“Those mythical three million illegal voters are the president’s obsession, his white whale,” said Bee. “Although if the whale were white, Trump would be a lot less concerned about it voting.”
But the commission still demanded that states send sensitive information about voters, which could include full names, phone numbers and part of social security numbers.
And it’s not just the President. Bee took a look at the commission, which is led by Vice President Mike Pence and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. Pence has been covered enough on late night, but Kobach is a new name to the scene. According to Bee, Kobach has echoed allegations that President Barack Obama was born in Kenya and worked to impose strict voter ID laws in his home state.
“How the f— do you go to Harvard, Yale and Oxford and come out a birther?” she exclaimed.
She also looked at other members, Hans von Spakovsky and J. Christian Adams. Von Spakovsky is the manager of the Heritage Foundation’s Election Law Reform Initiative and was called by the Bush administration a person who would undermine voting rights. Adams is an attorney who is shown in a clip saying that people who shouldn’t be registered are voting.
The group has “methodically chipping away at the Voting Rights Act since the moment LBJ signed it” said Bee.
