Sanaa Lathan Event Series ‘Shots Fired’ Ordered By Fox

Drama from “Beyond the Lights” filmmakers explores aftermath of police shooting

Fox has given the greenlight to event series “Shots Fired” starring Sanaa Lathan, the network announced Thursday.

The project hails from “Beyond the Lights” director Gina Price-Bythewood and her husband, producer Reggie Rock-Bythewood. It was put into development in October.

The story follows the aftermath of a police shooting involving an African-American officer and white teenager.

“Gina and Reggie have crafted a profoundly moving portrayal of a timely and sensitive issue that pervades our culture at this very moment,” said David Madden, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company, in a statement. “This is not only an important story to tell, but also an explosive mystery-thriller, and we couldn’t be in better hands both with the creative team behind this, along with the very talented Sanaa Lathan leading the cast.”

Lathan will play an expert investigator who digs into the case, alongside a special prosecutor sent to the town by the Department of Justice. The pair must navigate the media attention, public debate and the social unrest that comes with such a volatile case, as they seek justice before the divided town erupts in a race war.

Gina Price-Bythewood and Reggie Rock-Bythewood will write and executive produce the series, while Gina Price-Bythewood will direct. Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo will also serve as executive producers.

The drama will be produced by Undisputed Cinema and Imagine Television, in association with 20th Century Fox Television.

“Shots Fired” will debut on Fox in 2016.
