Annapurna has released a first-look image of Nicole Kidman’s crime thriller “Destroyer,” in which the actress looks very different from her usual self.

“Destroyer” received early attention thanks to Kidman’s extreme transformation for the role, revealed by paparazzi shots from the set. Now, in the picture obtained by Vanity Fair, we can see the transformation in full — Kidman has short hair, bags under her eyes and seems to be full of anger.

“We always knew that what we wanted her to look like was a real middle-aged woman with a past that she wears on her face,” director Karyn Kusama told Vanity Fair. “With sun damage and sleep deprivation and stress and rage, just in her whole physical body.”

The director said that Kidman used minimal prosthetics but was able to turn into a woman who “wears her ugliness on the outside, all that smallness and bitterness.”

Kusama is directing from a script by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi. The trio last collaborated on the unsettling 2015 indie gem “The Invitation.”

Kidman plays a police detective who “reconnects with people from an undercover assignment in her distant past in order to make peace,” an official synopsis said. The group is a cult-like gang in which Kidman’s character spent years embedded.

Sebastian Stan, Tatiana Maslany, Toby Kebbell and Bradley Whitford co-star.

Annapurna bought the project after a bidding war in Cannes for a mid-seven-figure price tag.
