Shannen Doherty Says Her Breast Cancer Has Returned: ‘I’m Stage 4’ (Video)

“Beverly Hills, 90210” star reveals diagnosis on “GMA”

Shannen Doherty revealed Tuesday on “Good Morning America” that her breast cancer has returned. It is “stage four,” she told Amy Robach.

Doherty was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015. The disease returned one year ago.

The “Beverly Hills, 90210” star said she is telling the world now amid a court battle with her insurance company, State Farm. Her cancer will be mentioned in legal documents, she said, which are a matter of public record.

“It’s going to come out in a matter of days or a week that — I’m stage four,” Doherty told “GMA.”

Doherty had planned to keep her diagnosis a private matter but that option is now out the window now, she said.

“I’d rather people hear it from me,” Doherty said. “I don’t want it to be twisted. I don’t want it to be a court document. I want it to be real and authentic.”

“I want to control the narrative,” she continued. “I want people to know from me, I just didn’t want them to know yet.”

The first time Doherty battled breast cancer, she chronicled her fight on social media. This time she only told a few people, including just one “BH90210” castmate, Brian Austin Green.

Doherty sued State Farm after her home was damaged in the 2018 Woolsey Fire. The “Charmed” actress says she had to pay out of pocket for losses she believes should be covered by her insurance policy.

State Farm says it has paid nearly $1 million to Doherty to clean and repair her home and personal property, and for temporary housing and furniture rental.

“We empathize with Ms. Doherty’s health issues and wish her a full recovery,” State Farm said in a statement to ABC News. “We strongly believe we have upheld our commitment to our customer and have paid what we owe on this claim. We are prepared to defend our position in court.”
