Robert Shapiro and Lindsay Lohan have made it official.
Less than a week before Lohan begins her 90-day jail sentence for probation violations, the O.J. Simpson Dream Team lawyer has filed the necessary documents with the court to take over as the troubled actress’ attorney.
And he’s sending Lindsay to jail.
"I have agreed to represent Ms. Lohan on the condition that she complies with all of the terms of her probation,” said Shapiro in a statement Friday, “including a requirement of jail time that was imposed by Judge Marsha Revel.”
Lindsay’s longtime lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley quit the actress’ case on July 8, as reports of prescription drug abuse emerged. As TheWrap has reported, Shapiro agreed to be Lohan’s lawyer earlier this week.
Lohan is still expected to surrender to authorities in Beverly Hills on July 20 to start her sentence at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California, for violating her probation, stemming from a 2007 DUI. Lohan would likely only serve about 22 days behind bars because of prison overcrowding and the nonviolent nature of her crime.
The actress' spotty attendance at Right On, a court-ordered alcohol education program, was the primary cause behind Revel’s almost-three-month jail sentence. It doesn’t end there. Lohan, who has been in and out of treatment programs over the years, has been court-ordered to enter a rehab in-patient program within two days of getting out of jail.
"Ms. Lohan is suffering from a disease that I am all too familiar with,” Shapiro said Friday, a day after Lohan checked into Pickford Lofts, a West Hollywood sober living centre started by the lawyer after the death of his own son from drugs in 2005. “Hopefully, I can be of assistance to Ms. Lohan and Judge Revel in implementing a treatment approach recommended by medical professionals for Ms. Lohan's long term recovery and sobriety."
