The secret is out: Sheldon Adelson and his family are the new owners of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The confirmation, reported in Thursday’s paper, came after the mysterious new owner of the paper declined to reveal their identity for a week.
Adelson’s son-in-law Patrick Dumont brokered the deal, according to the announcement.
“We understand the desire of the hard-working staff at the R-J and others in the community to know the identity of the paper’s new owners, and it was always our intention to publicly announce our ownership,” a family statement said.
The family said it kept its ownership secret for a week because it didn’t want to distract attention from the Republican debate being held in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Adelson’s family said it acquired the paper because it believes that a “strong and effective daily newspaper plays a critical role in keeping our state apprised of the important news and issues we face on a daily basis.”
“The family wants a journalism product that is second-to-none and will continue to invest in the paper to achieve this goal.”
