Bloodhounds are synonymous with private detectives, so what better dog for fiction’s most famous sleuth, Sherlock Holmes?

It certainly appears that “Sherlock” showrunners agree, if the Season 4 first look of star Benedict Cumberbatch and a bloodhound — a breed famed for their ability to track human scent — is anything to go by.

There’s no clues as to whether the crime-sniffing dog with replace Holmes’ other sidekick, Dr. Watson, but it’s safe to assume not as Martin Freeman is returning to the cast.

Holmes did have a dog called Toby in the classic books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which was modeled on his own half spaniel, half lurcher. And of course, there was another infamous dog featured in “The Hound of the Baskervilles.”

The image comes on the heels of Cumberbatch receiving an Emmy nomination for “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride,” with the show getting a total of six Emmy nods on Thursday.

Sadly fans will have to wait until 2017 to learn any more about the new canine character.

Airing on BBC One in the U.K. and PBS in the U.S., “Sherlock” runs as a three-part miniseries and has been a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic.
