Open Road Films released the first trailer for “Snowden” on Wednesday.
The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden, the U.S. government whistleblower who is currently facing espionage charges after leaking classified documents and information to the media. Shailene Woodley also stars.
Oscar winner Oliver Stone directed the film, based on the screenplay he co-wrote with Kieran Fitzgerald. It is based on the books “The Snowden Files” by Luke Harding and “Time of the Octopus” by Anatoly Kucherena. Moritz Borman, Eric Kopeloff and Philip Schulz-Deyle produced.
Snowden made international headlines in 2013 after he leaked thousands of classified NSA documents to the press. The documents detailed a widespread global government surveillance program capable of extracting private information from people’s emails and accessing cameras on their computers among many other unconstitutional activities.
“Snowden” is currently slated to premiere on Sept. 16.
