Sony Pictures Classics has acquired worldwide rights to “Brigsby Bear,” a dark comedy from Dave McCary.
The film premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section at Sundance.
“Saturday Night Live’s” Kyle Mooney stars in the eccentric comedy about a kid’s TV show produced for an audience of one, who sets out to finish the story after the show suddenly comes to an end. “Brigsby Bear” also features Claire Danes, Mark Hamill, Greg Kinnear, Matt Walsh and Michaela Watkins.
Kevin Costello and Mooney wrote the film, which is produced by The Lonely Island, Lord Miller and 3311 Productions, along with YL Pictures.
UTA Independent Film Group and Ian Stratford of Gray Krauss Stratford Sandler Des Rochers LLP, on behalf of the filmmakers, negotiated the deal.
Sony is planning a summer release for the film. The arthouse imprint has already scooped up “Call Me by Your Name” and “Novitiate” at this year’s Sundance.
