FBI Arrests Suspected LulzSec Hacker

The group claimed responsibility for hacking Sony in late May and early June

The FBI has apprehended an Arizona man suspected of hacking of computers at Sony Pictures earlier this summer.

Cody Kretsinger, a 23 year old from Tempe, Ariz., is expected to appear in court Thursday afternoon, where he will be formally charged with conspiracy and unauthorized impairment of a protected computer.

He is suspected to be a member of Lulz Security, a group that has claimed responsibility for a variety of hacking incidents, including the attack on Sony in late May and early June.

LulzSec initially boasted that it had accessed the personal information of more than 1 million accounts on SonyPictures.com, but the studio later said that a small fraction of that amount unknowingly forfeited personal information.

Some of LulzSec’s other attacks on the Japanese media giant include stealing the personal information of more than 100 million users of Sony’s Playstation Network and the hacking of the BMG website in Japan.

The group is also considered to be affiliated with another hacking group, Anonymous, which was behind the hacking of PayPal and Visa.

The British police have arrested members of LulzSec, but this is the first known arrest in the United States.
