SpongeBob Squarepants Looks for Gary in ‘Sponge on the Run’ Trailer – And Finds Keanu Reeves (Video)

Animated “The Spongebob Movie” at Paramount opens in theaters May 22, 2020

If you were concerned that a “SpongeBob Squarepants” animated movie might not be as surreal or as bonkers as the actual show, fear not. Because a sequence in the first trailer for “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on a Run” in which SpongeBob and Patrick meet the floating head of Keanu Reeves is as strange as you can imagine.

Yes, Keanu Reeves, John Wick himself, appears before SpongeBob and Patrick in a ball of tumbleweed while they’re on a quest to find SpongeBob’s pet snail, Gary, who has gone missing and is possibly “snailnapped.”

“Call me Sage. I’m made of sage and I am a sage, so it works out pretty well,” Reeves says in the trailer with a glint in his eye. “I’m Patrick, my name means ‘toaster’ in Celtic,” SpongeBob’s lovable pink friend responds.

With the exception of Reeves, “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on a Run” is a fully animated movie being released by Paramount Pictures on Memorial Day weekend 2020. The first trailer also shows SpongeBob and Patrick visiting the lost city of “Atlantic City” and losing their mind to gambling, and Patrick making a pretty good joke about ironing.

Tim Hill wrote and directed the film that features a voice cast of Tom Kenny, Awkwafina, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, Douglas Lawrence and Reggie Watts. The film is based on the series created by Stephen Hillenburg and is produced by Ryan Harris.

“Sponge on the Run” opens May 22, 2020. Watch the first trailer above.
